Everchanging Dream Job

When I was younger I started to think about what I would want to be my dream job. This is something that most kids do. Some of my first dreams of jobs were being an astronaut or a firefighter. Theses are jobs that sound fun and interesting as a kid and the danger is taken out of the equation when you’re thinking about them. When I was little I wanted to see the stars up close in space and wanted to be the hero that saves people’s lives from a fire or pull the out of a burning building. When I started going to school my job choices were a bit more reasonable and kept changing:

First I wanted to be an Oceanographer:

I always loved the ocean and the interesting sea creatures that lived in a different world than us practically. It also helped that for the first part of my life I live in Maryland walking distance from a beach.

Then I wanted to be a Paleontologist:

The first time I wanted to be a Paleontologist is when I first saw the Jurassic Park movies. I used to rewatch them all the time. I wanted to find the bones that they were found at the beginning of some of the movies, especially the first one.

Finally, we get to Graphic Design:

I knew that I wanted to do something in the field of Graphic Design when I took a course in high school just for an easy A that I didn’t have to think about but it ended up being my dream career choice. The course was called Computer Art Studio and that’s the class that first introduced me to the Adobe suite of creative programs and some art applications that you can do with them.

I fell in love with the tools and how to use them but still didn’t know how I could make money on this. I went to study at STLCC Meramec with the intention of transferring later when I finally figure out what I exactly want to do. When I was there finishing most of my General Education courses I would take a couple of Graphic Design courses as well to further explore the field and feel in love with it. It is there that I had the pleasure of having Michael Swoboda as a teacher. He is the one who pushed me to become better at what I’m doing and to always ask what else can I do to make the project even better. He gave me the beginnings of a structure for my work and the confidence to pursue ideas and to make them into a well designed final product. He also directed me to Maryville where I attend school currently and plan on graduating in the future. I just seem to have a natural design-oriented mind for this field. Science oriented careers to an art and design field is quite the jump but I’m glad I switched.
